A recent study published online compared the effectiveness of various types of exercise in managing symptoms of depression. The analysis examined 215 studies, including walking, running, yoga, tai chi, qi gong, aerobic exercise, and strength training. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of combining exercise with therapy and antidepressants.

The findings showed that for individuals using exercise as their sole treatment for depression, walking, running, yoga, strength training, and dancing were the most effective options. When exercise was combined with talk therapy, yoga, tai chi, and aerobic exercise were particularly beneficial for men and older adults. Moreover, individuals who took antidepressants and engaged in any form of exercise showed better outcomes compared to those who only took medication.

The researchers emphasized that while high-intensity exercise was most helpful for depression management. However, any consistent form of exercise can be beneficial regardless of duration or frequency.
