Curiosity Rover’s Journey to Namib Dune Sampling Site: Scientific Exploration and Analysis Ahead

Sol 1216: Anticipating Sampling and Scuffing

On Sol 1215, the Curiosity rover made a 67-meter drive towards the Namib Dune sampling site. The location of interest is clearly visible in the Navcam image. The plan for today includes another drive to position the rover for sampling and scuffing, which involves using a rover wheel to dig a small trench in the sand.

Scientific activities for the day include ChemCam and Mastcam observations to study the composition and opacity of the atmosphere. Additionally, the Mastcam will be used to look for any movement in the sand. After these observations, the rover will drive within 5-6 meters of the desired sampling spot. Post-drive images will be taken to prepare for a final adjustment tomorrow.

The team is eagerly looking forward to carrying out sampling and scuffing activities in the coming days. The rover will undergo close observation on both Thursday and Friday as these activities unfold.
