Armenia Demarcation Process in Kirants Region to Begin: Addressing Concerns and Resolving Disputes

Nikol Pashinyan to commence demarcation of undisputed border in the near future.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that the demarcation process in the Kirants region will soon begin, starting with areas that are not contested by the people of Kirants. He stated that they will seek solutions for the remaining three points and continue working on this issue until an announcement is made by the government. There are a total of 11 points in the Kirants region that require demarcation, and most of the population does not dispute these borders.

However, residents in Kirang have expressed concern over the closure of an interstate road leading to Georgia. They fear that Armenian territories, including those in Kirants, may be transferred to Azerbaijan as a result of the demarcation process. On April 19th, an agreement was reached between Yerevan and Baku to align certain parts of the Tavush-Gazakh border with the inter-republican border that existed at the time of Soviet Union’s collapse. This agreement will result in Armenia withdrawing from several villages near Berkaber but does not currently affect territories controlled by Azerbaijan near Voskepar or any other area under Armenian control.
