Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has joined forces with CNN to bring attention to the environmental challenges our planet faces and offer solutions. Meanwhile, the World Nature Photography Awards have announced a winner for a striking photo of two gannets battling for a fish in Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Tracey Lund captured the moment on camera while on vacation using a DSLR camera in a waterproof housing that she lowered into the sea.

The winning image was selected from thousands of submissions and received a $1,000 prize. The World Nature Photography Awards featured several categories, including animal portraits, plants and fungi, invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, and mammal behavior. Ivan Pedretti from Italy won the category of Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments with an enchanting photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland.

The World Nature Photography Awards were launched in 2020 with a mission to promote photography and support the planet by planting trees for each entry to the competition. According to Adrian Dinsdale, co-founder of WNPAs, photography has the power to change people’s perspectives and inspire them to take action for the environment. The 2024 awards showcased an impressive array of breathtaking images that highlight the beauty of our planet while raising awareness about its challenges.
