The University of Alabama System’s board of trustees has approved an agreement to acquire Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System, with Birmingham-based UAB taking ownership of all care sites. The deal is still pending approval from federal regulators and the Catholic Church, with a target closing date in the fall of 2024.
Upon completion of the transaction, both health systems will maintain operations in their respective communities. Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of UAB Health System, emphasized that patients will continue to have access to trusted healthcare services and providers, while also gaining access to a larger care network. The acquisition builds upon the collaboration between UAB and Ascension, which began with the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance in 2020.
Ascension’s Foundation for Health Equity will also continue its philanthropic efforts, providing grants to nonprofit organizations. CEO Jason Alexander expressed his commitment to supporting caregivers and associates during this transition. With a focus on strengthening hospitals in the state, UAB Health System views this acquisition as an opportunity to advance its mission of providing life-changing care. Ms. Bulgarella emphasized the alignment between UAB’s vision and the dedication of St. Vincent’s caregivers. The goal is to support the existing workforce and create meaningful career opportunities in service to patients and communities.
