Starke Workshop Promotes Mental Health First Aid for Youth: Teaching Practical Support and Encouraging Community Involvement

Young individuals in Bradford County undergo mental health first aid training

In Starke, Florida, a recent workshop focused on mental health first aid for youth was held. Coordinated by Madeline Adkins from Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, the University of Florida, and the Florida Department of Health, the training aimed to make mental health resources accessible to everyone in the community. The 7 ½ hour interactive session took place at the Starke Church of God learning center and included additional take-home materials.

During the workshop, participants watched examples of young people experiencing mental health issues and engaged in group discussions on how to effectively address these scenarios. An expert also taught them a 5-step plan for recognizing signs and symptoms of mental health challenges. Adkins emphasized the importance of teaching people practical ways to support those in their community who may be struggling with mental health issues and in need of help.

All attendees received a $25 gift card for their participation, and organizers from the Florida Department of Health indicated that this was just one of four mental health workshops planned for Bradford County. The collaborative effort between different organizations highlights a commitment to raising awareness about youth mental health and providing valuable resources to the community.
