Springing into Science: Beatrice High School Hosts Annual Greenhouse Sale

Annual Plant Sale Hosted by Science Club

The Beatrice High School science club is hosting its annual spring sale this week, with the aim of educating students on plant care and greenhouse maintenance. This year, the school’s greenhouse, which was a grant project initiated by Dr. Joan Christen several years ago, will be managed by BHS teacher Paula Heinz for the fifth consecutive year.

Heinz shared that both the science club and botany students assist during the sale days to ensure its success. The proceeds from the sale are utilized to purchase science equipment and fund senior scholarships for those planning to major in science in college.

The selection of plants sold at the event is based on new and interesting varieties that are both interesting and easy to care for. These plants are ordered from plugs from commercial greenhouses as BHS holds a distributor’s license and does not create its own plant varieties. However, Heinz mentioned that agricultural classes may be incorporated into the future, with an emphasis on practical applications of plant knowledge in various fields such as landscaping, plant science, genetics, gardening, and lawn care.

Interested individuals are advised to park in the high school parking lot and enter through the front doors, walking past the main staircase to the back of the school where the greenhouse is located. The sale will take place Wednesday through Friday from 3:45-5 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
