In an interview on “In the Moment” on SDPB Radio, a South Dakota scientific collaboration was discussed that is focused on finding alternatives to synthetic fertilizers. This project involves researchers from South Dakota Mines, South Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, and Sitting Bull College who are working together to develop biofertilizers.
The researchers, led by Prasoon Diwakar, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at South Dakota Mines, and Tanvi Govil, Ph.D., an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at Mines, shared their insights on their research. They are hopeful that by developing biofertilizers, they can create a more sustainable and efficient solution for fertilizing croplands in South Dakota.
The ultimate goal of the collaboration is to reduce the reliance on synthetic fertilizers, which can have negative environmental impacts.
