Shrinking Choices: Cigna Drops Out of Kansas Marketplace for 2024, While Aetna Enteres with Limited Options

Health Insurance Marketplace Affordable Care Act 2024

In 2024, the number of health plans available on the Kansas marketplace has decreased. Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company has decided not to offer any plans in Kansas for the upcoming year, despite offering 25 plans across eight counties in 2023. Aetna Life Insurance Company, on the other hand, is new to the Kansas marketplace and is only offering nine plans across 19 counties.

All eight insurers are offering expanded bronze, silver, and gold plans, with one insurer offering a bronze plan and three offering catastrophic plans. However, for the seventh consecutive year, there are no platinum plans being offered to individuals on the Kansas marketplace. All plans offered are exclusive provider organization (EPO) plans, which only cover services provided in-network by a “narrow network” of providers, except in an emergency.

Dental coverage is considered an essential health benefit for children enrolled in an ACA-compliant health plan and is included in the premium cost, but not for adults. Some insurers offer policies that include both health and dental coverage for adults where the premium covers both policies and APTC can be applied. Alternatively, adults can choose to purchase a stand-alone dental plan from five insurers available on the marketplace for 2024.
