Sainsbury’s partners with Microsoft to become an ‘AI-enabled grocer’ – The Technology Record

Microsoft has announced a partnership with Sainsbury’s to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning tools into the supermarket’s operations in the UK. The collaboration is part of Sainsbury’s ‘Next Level Sainsbury’s strategy’, which aims to utilize generative AI to improve online shopping interactions and customer search experiences.

In addition, Sainsbury’s will leverage AI to provide store staff with real-time data and insights to streamline in-store processes like shelf replenishment. By connecting multiple data sources, such as shelf-edge cameras, with AI technology, colleagues will receive guidance on which products need restocking. This initiative will be implemented using Microsoft Azure over the next five years, with data assets integrated with Microsoft 365 collaboration tools.

Clodagh Moriarty, Chief Retail and Technology Officer at Sainsbury’s, emphasized that the collaboration with Microsoft will propel the supermarket towards becoming the UK’s leading AI-enabled grocer. Moriarty highlighted the investment in transforming capabilities over the next few years to enhance efficiency, productivity, customer service, and shareholder returns.

Clare Barclay, CEO of Microsoft UK, praised Sainsbury’s for its visionary approach that prioritizes AI in its business operations. The partnership aims to develop new services that will elevate the customer and staff experience, reinforcing Microsoft’s commitment to powering the next generation of retail.
