Rising Temperatures Linked to Increase in Climate Anxiety: How to Stay Mentally Strong Amid Extreme Weather

How Does Heat Affect Mental Health? Therapist Explains the Impact of High Temperatures on Mood and Behavior

As temperatures rise across southeast Texas and the US, the impact on mental health may be less obvious than the physical effects of heat. However, experts warn that extreme weather is leading to a rise in climate anxiety.

In addition to causing discomfort and dehydration, high temperatures can also lead to isolation for those who are sensitive to heat during the summer months. The heat can also affect behavior, causing irritability and anxiety levels to increase.

Therapist Alejandra Galindo from Thriveworks in Houston explained that the natural increase in body temperature during hot weather can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety. This can result in increased irritability and anxiety, especially when temperatures rise outside. To combat these negative impacts, Galindo recommended avoiding social media or websites that can increase anxiety, known as “doom scrolling.” She also suggested staying connected with friends, prioritizing positive thoughts, and taking steps to manage anxiety.
