Red Hot Tennessee Blasts Georgia Softball, Threatening Their SEC Tournament Hopes

Georgia Softball Falls to Tennessee 5-1 in Series Opener | Georgia Sports

No. 3 Georgia softball struggled to keep up with No. 6/4 Tennessee in Knoxville, as the Bulldogs fell to a 30-7 record and a conference play record of 6-4 following the loss. Despite their tough competition, freshman Emily Digby managed to prevent a shutout with a solo home run in the fifth inning, keeping Georgia from suffering its first shutout loss of the season.

Georgia had previously dropped a series to No. 20 Arkansas at home before starting conference play on a high note by winning a series against Alabama and sweeping Ole Miss. However, with only four conference series left to play and the SEC tournament looming, the Bulldogs face crucial games like this one against Tennessee that will determine whether they can salvage the series or face the possibility of being swept for the first time this season.

The Volunteers took an early lead on Friday night with a two-run home run off of Georgia starter Lilli Backes in the first inning. They continued to extend their lead, making it 3-0 in the third inning with an infield RBI and adding two more runs in the fourth with an RBI double, bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of Tennessee. The series between Georgia and Tennessee will continue on April 6 at 12 p.m. on SEC Network, and it will be crucial for both teams as they fight for victory and positioning heading into tournament season.
