Assistant City Manager Brandon Branham is concerned about the statistics of 1,000 cyclist deaths and 130,000 injuries in crashes across the country annually. With a rise in pedestrian fatalities, the city views anyone not in a vehicle as a “vulnerable road user” and is focused on using technology to enhance safety at intersections.
The city’s Curiosity Lab serves as a testing ground for cutting-edge technology, including equipment that alerts cyclists and drivers to potential collisions. Branham mentioned the Spoke Companion App as one of the tools being tested, which enables cyclists and drivers to see each other on the road. This technology aims to prevent injuries and fatalities, with the city planning to put it to the test during an upcoming pro cycling race.
Through these efforts, Peachtree Corners hopes to see a decrease in fatalities and an increase in overall road safety. Recognizing that the technology is still emerging, the city is exploring additional measures such as digital signage to alert drivers and cyclists. By leveraging these advanced tools, Peachtree Corners is committed to protecting all road users and making their streets safer for everyone.
