Pawsitively Imperfect: The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest and Its Importance in Celebrating Unique Canine Companions

Wild Thang, a Pekingese, is crowned World’s Ugliest Dog.

The Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif., has been hosting the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest for almost 50 years. Last year’s winner was a 7-year-old Chinese Crested dog named Scooter who was born with deformed hind legs. Despite the challenges he faced from his hind legs, Linda Elmquist adopted him and they now reside happily in Tucson, Ariz.

The event celebrates the unique imperfections that make all dogs special. Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese who placed second in the competition three times before finally getting his crown as the winner of the 2024 contest, is just one example of how this event brings attention to the special needs of pets and promotes adoption.

Wild Thang is a survivor of distemper, a viral disease that caused permanent damage to his teeth and led to his tongue sticking out. Despite his health issues, he is described as a happy “glugly” (glamorous/ugly) pup by his owner Ann Lewis. Together with Wild Thang, Lewis walked away with $5,000 in prize money.

The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest showcases and celebrates dogs that are often overlooked due to their physical appearance. The event promotes adoption and encourages people to appreciate the unique personalities found in all dogs regardless of their looks. It spreads awareness about the special needs of pets and how important it is to celebrate all dogs for who they truly are.
