New Iran-Iraq Science Liaison Set to Boost Academic Collaboration and Enhance Student Exchanges

Iran assigns science diplomat to Iraq

Nader Nourmohammadi has been appointed as the science attaché for Iran in Iraq by Minister of Science, Research, and Technology, Mohammad-Ali Zolfigol. The primary responsibilities of the newly appointed attaché include identifying scientific capacities and facilities in Iraq, fostering scientific connections and cooperation with universities and research institutions in Iran, and attracting students and technologists.

In May 2023, Naeem Al-Aboudi, the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, expressed that many young people are interested in pursuing higher education in Iran. He emphasized that the demand for studying in Iran is high, with a large number of Iraqi students wanting to continue their education there. Al-Aboudi made these statements during a meeting with Zolfigol in Tehran, where he mentioned that 75,000 Iraqi nationals are currently studying at Iranian universities.

Zolfigol highlighted the importance of increasing joint scientific exchanges between Iran and Iraq and organizing joint seminars. He suggested that holding a meeting between heads of universities and research and technology centers from both countries could enhance cooperation. In July 2022, Vahid Haddadi-Asl, the deputy science minister of Iran, prioritized increasing academic cooperation with Iraq among Islamic and neighboring countries.

During a meeting with Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran Naseer Abdul Mohsen Abdullah, Haddadi-Asl noted that Iraq has the most significant number of foreign nationals studying at Iranian universities. Both sides are focused on strengthening scientific and educational cooperation between their countries to promote mutual understanding and progress in various fields.
