Long-Term Care Nurses Protest Corporate Profits, Demand Better Staffing and Wages at 37 Ontario Pickets

MEDIA ALERT: Long-Term Care Nurses and Health-care Professionals to Stage Pickets Across Ontario on Friday

On Friday, nurses and healthcare professionals from the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) who work in long-term care homes will be holding information pickets at 37 locations across the province. These pickets are a response to the upcoming bargaining negotiations between more than 3,000 nurses, personal support workers, and guest attendants represented by ONA and their corporate employers.

The companies have seen record profits in recent years while staff and vulnerable residents have been bearing the weight of these profits. During the pickets, ONA members will be distributing leaflets and picketing to urge their corporate employers to prioritize resident care over profits. The nurses and healthcare professionals are advocating for staffing ratios to enhance resident care and for equal wages with hospital workers to incentivize experienced staff to stay in the long-term care sector.

The ONA represents over 68,000 registered nurses and healthcare professionals as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates across various healthcare settings. The pickets on Friday will be an opportunity for nurses, healthcare professionals, community members, and supporters to come together to advocate for improved staffing ratios and equal wages in long-term care facilities.

For a detailed list of picket times, locations, and contacts please visit the ONA website at ona.org/nh. The pickets will take place throughout the day on Friday, April 12th, 2024 at 37 locations across Ontario.
