Legendary Kaaba Caretaker Salah bin Zain al-Abidin al-Shaibi Dies After Battle with Illness

Sheikh Salah al-Shaibi, the Guardian of the Keys to the Kaaba, Passes Away

Salah bin Zain al-Abidin al-Shaibi, the longtime keeper of the keys to the Kaaba in Mecca, passed away after a battle with illness. As the main shrine of the Muslim world, the Kaaba is located within the Sacred Mosque and has been in the hands of members of the al-Shaibi family for centuries, dating back to when Prophet Muhammad first conquered Mecca in 622 AD.

During his time as keeper of the keys, Salah oversaw a number of important duties, including opening and closing the shrine, ensuring proper cleaning and ablutions were performed before entry, and maintaining the kiswa – a traditional covering made of black and gold embroidery. In addition to his duties as caretaker of one of Islam’s most sacred sites, Salah was also a professor of Islamic theology and an author who wrote many books and articles on faith.

King Salman and Prince Muhammad expressed their condolences to Salah’s family following his passing. The candidates for his position are said to be Salah’s son and nephew, who have served as his deputies at different times.
