Forgotten Crises: WFP Chief Urges World to Keep Focus on Sudan and Other Food-Insecure Countries Amid Gaza Debate

WFP Chief McCain Urges Global Community to Remember Sudan and Other Countries, Despite Focus on Gaza

World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain is urging the world not to forget about other countries facing famine as the focus is on Gaza. In an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” she emphasized the importance of remembering countries like Sudan, DRC Congo, Somalia, Yemen, and Haiti that are also in desperate need of assistance but are often overlooked.

While Gaza is currently receiving significant attention, McCain warned that Sudan and other countries are on the verge of even larger food crises. She pointed out that nearly 18 million people in Sudan are experiencing “acute food insecurity,” and 7.7 million individuals have been displaced both within and outside of Sudan since April 2023.

Despite her efforts to raise awareness about the potential for famine in Gaza, McCain has also been actively addressing the crisis in Sudan and other regions. She believes that these countries must not be neglected as they are already facing devastating food shortages and displacement.

As the world remains focused on humanitarian issues in Gaza, McCain is calling for continued support for countries like Sudan that are in urgent need of assistance. These nations are on the brink of severe food crises that are already in progress, and it is essential to ensure they receive the attention and resources necessary to prevent further suffering and devastation.
