Italy’s 2024 Electromagnetic Emission Adjustment: Boosting the Italian 5G Economy While Maintaining High Safety Standards

Enhancing the 5G network with new limits on electromagnetic fields

In 2023, Italy will have the power to increase the limit of electromagnetic emissions from 6 V/m in 2003 to 15 V/m as indicated by the device in question. A statement from the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy highlights that this adjustment can contribute to the development of the Italian 5G economy, allowing for high-performance networks that boost competitiveness.

In order to make efficient use of the frequency spectrum, corrective provisions have been introduced to the Electronic Communications Code, in line with CEI 211-10 Technical Standard. These provisions are based on two fundamental principles: fair distribution of electromagnetic space and effectiveness. The increase in emission limits, which takes effect on April 29, 2024, will facilitate the broader adoption of 5G technology, enabling mobile operators to improve their network capacity.

It is worth noting that while Italy has set a limit of 15 V/m for electromagnetic emissions, this remains one of the strictest profiles in Europe. However, this limit falls short of ICNIRP’s recommendation for a maximum limit of 61 V/m. This disparity reflects Italy’s commitment to maintaining stringent safety standards when regulating electromagnetic emissions.
