Grand Rapids on the Brink of Soccer Stadium: How a Partnership Could Boost Tourism and Economy

Grand Rapids considers building a soccer stadium to elevate local sports and events

Grand Rapids, Michigan may soon be home to a new soccer stadium as part of a potential partnership between ASM Global and the West Michigan Sports Commission. The idea for a soccer complex or stadium has been discussed since a grand action study was conducted, which highlighted the need for a professional soccer team, a soccer stadium, and adult and youth amateur complexes to enhance the destination and attract more visitors to the area.

According to Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission, bringing a professional soccer team to Grand Rapids would not only draw more people but also create more events. The funding for the project would come from visitor tax money generated through the Kent Campaign to raise the lodging tax by 3% in Kent County.

Guswiler emphasized that bringing a professional soccer team to Grand Rapids is essential as it would provide additional entertainment options for both local residents and visitors. The proposed facility could serve more than just soccer matches when there are no games. It could be used for various events and activities to further enhance the destination and entertainment options in Grand Rapids.

The proposed addition to Grand Rapids’ sports and entertainment landscape would be valuable, catering to both local residents and visitors alike. If successful, this partnership could bring significant economic benefits to the area while enhancing its appeal as a top tourist destination in Michigan.
