District Baseball and Softball Teams: The Wait is Over for a Nice Day to Make up Postponed Games, But Are Fields Ready Yet?

Key things to look out for in WPIAL sports on April 13, 2024: Get ready to play ball as rain clears.

On April 3, Hempfield catcher Caden Biondi forced out Central Catholic’s Andres Hurkmans at home plate during their game at No Offseason in Russelton. The weather has been a challenge for district baseball and softball teams, but the rain has finally stopped and some sunshine is expected on Saturday. The question now is whether teams can take advantage of the nice day to get postponed section games in, or if the fields are still too soggy to use.

In Section 2-6A, Hempfield currently sits in first place with a perfect record of 5-0 in section play and 9-0 overall. They look to complete their second straight three-game sweep against Baldwin, who are struggling at 0-4 in the section and 1-7 overall. In their first two games of the series, Hempfield defeated Baldwin by a combined score of 19-2.

In Section 3-5A, Western Beaver visits West Allegheny on Saturday afternoon. This game is significant as South Fayette and Mars are tied for first place in the section. Both teams are averaging double-digit runs scored per game, with Western Beaver and West Allegheny combining for a record of 9-2 overall.

WPIAL lacrosse teams are also in action on Saturday, with some matchups against out-of-district or out-of-state teams. Within District 7 borders, there are several key battles on both sides of the gender divide. On the boys side, Mars visits Mt. Lebanon, North Hills hosts Gateway, and Hempfield takes on Central Catholic. In girls lacrosse, Canon-McMillan faces South Fayette, North Allegheny hosts Freeport
