Despite Terror Threat, T20 World Cup Remains a Focus on Safety and Security

Report warns of terror threat to T20 World Cup in West Indies originating from North Pakistan

The upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by West Indies and the USA, has received a terror threat from North Pakistan. According to a report on Cricbuzz, pro-Islamic State (IS) media sources have urged supporters to join the battlefield in their countries and incited violence against sporting events.

Despite this threat, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has assured everyone that safety measures are in place. CEO Jonny Graves stated that they work closely with authorities in host countries and cities to monitor and evaluate the global landscape for appropriate security plans. A comprehensive and robust security plan has already been established for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with safety and security being the top priorities.

Reports of potential threats have also emerged in Caribbean media. Trinidad Prime Minister Keith Rowley mentioned that security agency plans are in place to tackle any threats to matches, with Barbados regional security officials monitoring potential threats to the ICC event. Intelligence of a possible threat through Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) media group ‘Nashir Pakistan’ has also been received.

The T20 World Cup will be hosted by Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean islands. Efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of all involved in the tournament despite the threat from North Pakistan.
