Dangerous Algal Bloom at Candlewood Reservoir: Public Alert and Safety Measures

Health Alert: Toxic Algae Bloom Detected at Candlewood Reservoir by Douglas County Health Department

A warning has been issued by the Douglas County Health Department and the Stormwater Division of the City of Omaha about a harmful algal bloom at Candlewood Reservoir in west Omaha. Tests conducted on water samples from the reservoir revealed total microcystin levels that exceeded the recommended threshold of eight parts per billion.

In response to this alert, it is important for the public to exercise caution and avoid swimming in the reservoir until further notice. Recreational fishing and boating are still allowed, but residents are advised to be cautious and take care not to come into contact with the water that could potentially lead to swallowing it.

Pet owners should also keep their pets away from the water and prevent them from drinking from the lake to avoid any potential harm from the algal bloom. The safety and well-being of the community should always be a top priority.
