Beef or Iron-Deficiency: The Truth Behind the Motherly Advice

Consuming beef daily enhances blood quality

Pregnant women are advised by their mothers to consume beef as it is rich in iron and can increase blood for both the mother and child without the need for supplements. Beef contains many vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for health, including 87g of lean beef providing 2-3mg of iron. However, a balanced diet is essential, and it’s important to incorporate vitamins, calcium, omega-3, and unsaturated fats in appropriate amounts.

Daily consumption of beef to nourish blood is not recommended as it can lead to illness, decreased appetite, fatigue, stress, and nutrient deficiencies. Beef is high in protein but individuals with gout, high blood pressure, heart disease and high blood fat should not consume excessive amounts. People with kidney stones should also avoid beef as it is rich in protein and can increase the amount of oxalate in the urine leading to more stone formation. Overconsumption of beef can result in iron overload which can be harmful to health.

The National Institute of Nutrition recommends that healthy adults consume no more than 50-70g of red meat per day which is equivalent to one or two palms of an adult’s hand. To ensure adequate nutrition it’s recommended to combine red meat with other protein-rich foods such as white meat, beans and mushrooms. Adding plenty of green vegetables and fruits to the daily diet; drinking plenty of water; and engaging in regular exercise are also beneficial ways to maintain good health.
