College Football Playoff Expansion to 12 Teams: How it Works and Who Stands to Benefit

Schedule Released for First-Ever 12-Team College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff is expanding to 12 teams, with automatic bids for power conference champions and opening-round on-campus postseason matchups. This means that more teams will be able to participate in the playoffs and compete for the national title.

The schedule for the postseason has been announced by ESPN and the CFP. The playoffs will begin on Friday, December 20 with an opening-round game, followed by three more on-campus games the next day on Saturday. This format will allow for more excitement and unpredictability as teams battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinal games.

Quarterfinal games will take place on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. These games will determine which eight teams will advance to the semifinals. The semifinals will be at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl, with the national title game on January 20, 2025 in Atlanta. This final matchup will determine which team will be crowned as the national champion of college football.

LSU is hoping for its first CFP berth under Brian Kelly and is looking to be one of the several SEC teams in the field.
