Broncos cut ties with injury-prone tight end Dylan Leonard to make room for new linebacker acquisition

Broncos release TE Dylan Leonard with injury settlement

The Broncos made the tough decision to waive undrafted rookie tight end Dylan Leonard with an injury settlement on Thursday in order to clear a roster spot for linebacker Andre Smith. Despite signing with the team as an undrafted player, Leonard had missed the last part of the offseason program due to an undisclosed injury.

During his time at Georgia Tech, Leonard played 453 snaps last season primarily as a run blocker. He only caught 14 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown. Throughout his five-year career, he has a total of 41 receptions for 387 yards and one touchdown.

The Broncos had to make this tough decision to make room for Smith on the roster, who they signed on Wednesday from the New England Patriots’ practice squad. The move came after veteran linebacker Joseph Jones was placed on injured reserve earlier in the day.

Leonard had received $27,500 of his contract guaranteed, including a $5,000 signing bonus, according to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. With this move, the Broncos will have $2 million in cap space available for future signings or trades.
