Brentwood Residents Celebrate as Liquor Store Plans Derailed, Property Repurposed for Small Business Support Center

Business center to be built in response to community concerns over proposed liquor store location

On Thursday, Mayor Donna Deegan announced that a property in Brentwood, which had been met with opposition from the neighborhood for plans to turn it into a drive-thru liquor store, will now be repurposed as a small-business support center. The property, located at 865 Golfair Blvd. across from the KIPP Voice Academy K-7 school, had sparked months of backlash in 2023 from neighbors who believed a liquor store was not suitable and unnecessary for the area.

The Jacksonville City Council took a significant step in November 2023 by purchasing the property for $1.8 million with the intention of transforming it into a community or resource center that would benefit the neighborhood. This decision marked a positive development in response to the concerns raised by residents about the initial plans for a liquor store.

Now, this property will be used to provide resources and support to small businesses in the area, helping them grow and succeed. This is great news for Brentwood and its residents, who have been advocating for more support for local businesses.
