Breaking Barriers: Women in eSports and Telefónica’s Level UP Conference

Telefónica addresses challenges facing women in eSports in conversation on leveling up female representation

The world of eSports is becoming increasingly popular, with more and more people joining the gaming community every day. However, women have traditionally been underrepresented in this space. To address these challenges, Telefónica Hispanoamérica recently hosted an online event called “Level UP of Women in eSports.”

The event focused on various aspects of women’s involvement in gaming, including sponsorship, public relations, and content creation. Participants included Francisca Sky, a Chilean video game and technology communicator; Estefania Carrera, a sponsorship coordinator at Telefónica Movistar Mexico; Eider Diaz Ascasso, the head of communication at CODE SPACE (Spain) with ties to eSports; and Anita Balanzategui, the head of sponsorship at Telefónica Movistar Ecuador.

During the event, these professionals shared their experiences working in areas related to eSports and emphasized that being a gamer is not the only role available in the industry. They discussed the importance of creating more opportunities for women in eSports tournaments to achieve gender equality. The participants highlighted that in the eSports industry, skills are what matter, not gender.

Moreover, the speakers stressed the significance of protecting women and children in the eSports industry through alliances between different groups interested in ensuring participants’ safety. The event underscored the growing role of female gamers in the video game and technology industry, with statistics showing that female gamers represent approximately 48% of gamers worldwide. However, barriers such as identity reservation due to harassment still exist.

The event shed light on the progress made in terms of gender equality in eSports while emphasizing the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive and safe environment for all participants. It was clear that there is still much work to be done before women can truly break through into this male-dominated space.

Overall, it was inspiring to see so many talented women participating in this event and speaking up about their experiences working within eSports. With continued efforts from organizations like Telefónica Hispanoamérica and others like them who share their commitment to promoting diversity within this growing industry, we can hope for a brighter future where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed regardless of gender or background.
