Boeing 747-8 Lufthansa Plane Returns Due to Mysterious Electrical Smell in Cabin

Lufthansa Boeing plane changes course for flight to Chicago

A Lufthansa passenger plane carrying almost 340 people had to make an unscheduled return to Frankfurt am Main on Thursday due to an unusual smell on board. The cause of the incident was an unidentifiable electrical smell in the cabin, as reported by “Bild”.

The Boeing 747-8 was en route to Chicago when the incident occurred. Fortunately, there was no smoke on board the plane and the source of the odor remains unknown. Once the plane landed “normally” in Frankfurt, technicians examined it to determine the cause of the smell. The 320 passengers and 19 crew members disembarked as usual and were expected to continue their journey with a replacement plane later that evening.

Lufthansa emphasized that the decision to turn around was made as a precaution to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. According to reports from “Bild”, the smell was first noticed 90 minutes after takeoff while the plane was flying over the Atlantic Ocean.
