A New Dawn for Indonesia: Building a Safer Future through the Construction of Nusantara

Exploring Indonesia’s New Capital, Nusantara, as Jakarta Continues to Sink.

The construction of the new city of Nusantara in Indonesia is underway, with the aim of serving as the country’s new capital. This move comes after a decision was made to relocate the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara due to climate change. Jakarta, located on Java’s northwest coast, is Indonesia’s current capital and largest city, home to over 10.6 million people and about 30 million in the metropolitan area. However, approximately 40% of Jakarta is now below sea level due to rising sea levels, putting it at risk of sinking.

The new city of Nusantara is being built on Borneo’s eastern coast, around 870 miles north of Jakarta. The construction of Nusantara is estimated to cost $35 billion and is expected to be completed by 2045. Despite this completion date, about 6,000 government workers are expected to move to Nusantara before October when the next president will take office.

This decision by Indonesia follows a trend seen in other countries that have relocated their capitals. Brazil moved its capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in 1960 while Nigeria moved its capital from Lagos to Abuja in 1991. However, this move marks the first time that climate change has played a significant role in a country’s decision-making process.

The Indonesian government has cited rising sea levels as the primary reason behind moving the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara. The new city will provide a safer location for millions of people and protect them from further flooding and landslides caused by climate change.

In conclusion, construction on Nusantara is currently underway as part of Indonesia’s plan to move its capital and safeguard millions of people living in high-risk areas due to climate change.
