Zim Aircraft Secures Contract with Widebody Customer for Premium Economy Seat Line, Highlights Importance of Privacy and Post-Pandemic Travel

Zim Aircraft Seating has recently secured a contract with an undisclosed widebody customer for their new premium economy seat. The reclining variant of this product has been in high demand, with CEO Sven Achilles noting during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg that customers have the option to choose between a heavier fixed-shell or a lighter recliner.

Both versions of the premium economy seat feature additional privacy features, which Achilles believes are increasingly important to passengers in a post-pandemic travel environment. He highlights that travelers are seeking personal space and privacy, which is reflected in the design of the seats. Zim is also implementing anti-microbial coatings on plastic surfaces to address hygiene concerns brought about by the pandemic.

Achilles emphasizes the importance of the premium economy segment for airlines, noting that it can be a strong financial investment due to the revenue generated by the space. Zim has introduced two new products to cater to this market and has already secured launch customers for both variants of the premium economy seats. Despite recent growth following the acquisition of Haeco Cabin Solutions, Zim continues to face challenges related to supply chain shortages, particularly concerning plastic components. Aircraft delivery delays from OEMs have also impacted the company, but Achilles is optimistic that these challenges will lessen in 2024. He stresses the importance of attracting and retaining skilled labor to support Zim’s growth and capacity building efforts.
