Younger Workers Rise Up: CC OO Union Takes Action to Address Labor and Housing Discrimination in Spain

CC OO suggests that part-time employees can count additional hours towards full-time status.

The CC OO union is taking action to address issues that disproportionately affect newer workers, particularly in terms of labor and housing. Through assemblies held across Spain, young union members have identified barriers to professional and social advancement for young people, whose average age of emancipation in Spain exceeds 30 years. They have developed specific proposals to address these challenges, encompassing labor issues, access to housing, combating inequality and discrimination, and promoting mental health.

In terms of labor issues, young union members are advocating for action to strengthen the Labor Inspection to ensure that overtime hours are compensated and a reform of part-time contract regulations. They propose modifying Article 12 of the Workers’ Statute to address the habitual use of additional hours and transform part-time contracts into full-time contracts when a certain threshold of additional hours is exceeded.

The leaders point out that labor poverty is a significant issue for young people in Spain, with one in five young workers considered poor and half of young renters facing financial challenges. They attribute this to discriminatory practices such as double salary scales and entry conditions and salary structures that favor seniority benefits. The union is calling for an end to these practices to ensure fair treatment of young workers.

The CC OO leaders also highlighted the importance of addressing discrimination in recruitment processes and advocating for blind resumes to combat bias against young LGBTQ individuals. They emphasize the need for works councils to be present during job interviews to prevent discriminatory questions and ensure fair treatment of all candidates.

In addition to labor issues, the union is focused on the challenges young people face in accessing affordable housing. They call for policy changes to enable municipalities to regulate rental prices, citing the lack of public housing stock and market inflation as major barriers to youth socialization and economic stability. The union proposes ambitious measures to address the housing crisis and create a more equitable distribution of benefits for all members of society.

Overall, the CC OO union is working hard to ensure that younger workers receive fair treatment in both their personal lives and their professional lives. By advocating for policy changes that promote equity, equality, fairness, affordability, and safety, they are helping create a better future for all Spanish citizens.
