The New York Yankees suffered a blow to their season on Thursday, as they were swept by the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series. The Reds had not previously swept the Yankees in this season, but they managed to do so with an 8-4 lead in the ninth inning. Despite the team’s best efforts, they were unable to mount a comeback and lost the game.
The error made by Trent Grisham in the outfield only added to the frustration of fans, as his lackluster effort drew boos from the crowd. Despite this, the Reds were unable to capitalize on the mistake and ended up striking out Spencer Steer to end the inning.
Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman struggled in the game, allowing three home runs and five earned runs in just five innings of work. This loss marks 13 out of their last 17 games for the Yankees, pushing them from first place in AL East to two games back. Even Aaron Judge, who has been hitting like an MVP this season, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts during this game.
Criticism has been directed towards Judge’s hitting coach Richard Schenck after he called out their offensive player development as “terrible.” It is clear that something needs to change for this team if they want to stay competitive within their division.
Up next for the Yankees are crucial road trips against both Baltimore Orioles before heading into All-Star break. They will need to find a way to turn things around if they want to avoid falling further behind in division standings
