New York Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga will miss an extended period of time due to another elbow injury, marking the second year in a row that he has faced this issue. The 29-year-old right-hander was placed on the 60-day injured list after a strained right flexor muscle occurred towards the end of his outing in a recent game. This setback comes after Loáisiga pitched a hitless ninth inning and had performed well in his relief appearances this season.
Manager Aaron Boone stated that Loáisiga has a significant forearm strain, and although initially downplayed the severity of the injury, he will now be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time. Last year, Loáisiga was limited to just 17 games due to right elbow inflammation which caused him to miss a significant portion of the season.
To fill Loáisiga’s roster spot, the Yankees brought up 27-year-old right-hander Dennis Santana from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Santana has some major league experience and previously played for the New York Mets before signing a minor league contract with the Yankees last December. Boone expressed confidence in Santana’s abilities and believes that he will play a significant role for the team in the upcoming games.
