On Sunday, the New York Yankees suffered a blow when first baseman Anthony Rizzo was forced to leave the game early during their game against the Boston Red Sox. In the seventh inning, Rizzo hit a ground ball and collided with Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino at first base, landing awkwardly on his right wrist. Despite being safe, Rizzo was removed from the game and replaced by pinch-runner Oswaldo Cabrera.
Rizzo is scheduled for further testing on Monday to determine the severity of his injury and how long he might be sidelined. Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that initial imaging was negative, but Rizzo is experiencing pain in several areas of his lower arm. This injury comes after Rizzo’s collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. last year, which ended his season early due to post-concussion syndrome.
The Red Sox went on to win by six runs with the help of Connor Wong’s two-run triple in the seventh inning. Boston set a league record with nine stolen bases in the game, the most allowed by the Yankees since 1915. With a 50-24 record, the Yankees currently lead the AL East but have lost three of their last four games. They will face the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series starting on Tuesday.
