OpenAI’s ‘chatbot’, ChatGPT, powered by generative AI, experienced a worldwide service interruption that caused issues in responding to user requests. The outage was reported around 9:21 am (mainland Spain) according to the DownDetector portal, coinciding with the company’s announcement on their website that they were investigating the problem.
An hour after acknowledging the issue, OpenAI stated that they had identified the cause and were working on mitigating it. However, they did not disclose the exact cause of the interruption. By 1 pm, OpenAI announced that they had implemented a solution and were monitoring the results, but indicated that “ChatGPT is not available for some users.” This was confirmed through a notification on Europa Press’s mobile application displaying “The server has problems. Try again later.”
