In preparation for the first T20 World Cup match at a temporary stadium in New York, security measures have been heightened to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. The venue at Eisenhower Park, with a capacity of 34,000, will host its inaugural match on Monday, featuring South Africa against Sri Lanka.
The Nassau County Police Department is leading a significant operation to ensure that the matches at the Long Island venue from 3-12 June are safe and incident-free. Measures will include SWAT teams with specialized snipers, as well as plainclothes officers inside the ground. India and Pakistan will face off at the venue on 9 June in what is considered the most high-profile match of the tournament’s group stage.
Safety has been a top priority, with officers from various law enforcement agencies working together in preparation for the event. The park surrounding the stadium will be closed to the public on match days to prevent drone threats. Fans attending the matches will undergo stringent security checks, including searches and screening similar to airport procedures.
The ICC has emphasized that safety is paramount, and they have implemented a strong security plan along with local authorities to address any potential risks. The high level of security measures is compared to that of the Super Bowl, ensuring a safe environment for all participants. Despite the temporary nature of the stadium, costing £24m ($30m) to build, it will be dismantled after the tournament, with the land returning to Nassau County. The collaborative effort between security forces and event organizers aims to provide a secure and enjoyable experience for all cricket fans attending the matches.
