World Cup 2021: Tight competition in Olten as Switzerland leads the race

Heikkilä and Swiss duo top World Cup rankings ahead of Genoa

In the first round of the World Cup in Olten, Switzerland, Simona Aebersold and Natalia Gemperle shared the top spot in the women’s division. Meanwhile, Tuomas Heikkilä from Finland led the men’s standings after winning third place in Saturday’s Knock-Out Sprint and following it up with a second place in Sunday’s sprint race.

Heikkilä’s impressive performance has brought him to a total of 140 points, with Jonatan Gustafsson from Sweden closely trailing behind. Emil Svensk from Sweden won Sunday’s sprint race and is currently in third place with 122 points. Joey Hadorn from Switzerland won Saturday’s Knock-Out event and is in fourth place with 69 points. Martin Regborn from Sweden and Timo Suter from Switzerland round out the top six with 110 and 69 points respectively.

In the women’s competition, Gemperle secured third place in Sunday’s sprint race and finished second in both races on Saturday, while Aebersold finished in second place on both days. Tove Alexandersson, a nine-time World Cup winner, is currently in third place with 137 points.

Switzerland leads the Team World Cup standings after the first round, followed closely by Sweden. Norway, Finland, France, and Denmark are also close behind. The next round of the World Cup will take place in Genoa, Italy this weekend featuring a sprint race on Saturday and a sprint relay on Sunday. Fans can watch both races on IOF TV and IOF LIVE.
