Wooden Wind Turbine Blades: The Future of Sustainable Energy

Voodin Blade Technology, a German wind turbine blade manufacturer, has successfully installed the first set of wooden turbine blades in Breuna, Germany. These blades are 19.3 meters long and made from homodirectional plywood (LVL), a sustainable material consisting of many thin layers of wood. The company plans to manufacture even longer blades in the future, with lengths exceeding 60 meters and 80 meters.

In comparison to traditional materials like fiberglass, LVL is considered more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Most wind turbine blades have a lifespan of 20-25 years and are not easily recyclable, leading to millions of tons of waste by 2050. Voodin Blade Technology aims to address this issue by creating blades that are more sustainable and can be recycled at the end of their lifespan.

The new blades developed by Voodin Blade Technology are stronger and more durable than current fiberglass blades. They have higher fatigue resistance and can withstand various weather conditions onshore. The company uses CNC milling machines to create complex 3D shapes, allowing for highly automated production without the need for molds. This reduces the need for manual labor and enables the company to locate production facilities closer to wind farms, reducing transportation costs and lowering emissions.
