Winter Sports Season Recap: Top Athletes of the Winter, From Bowling to Basketball and Beyond

Vote for the top performers of the winter sports season

The high school sports season was paused last week for spring break with only a handful of events scheduled. It’s a good time to take a closer look at the winter season, specifically the Athlete of the Week winners.

Milan bowler Maggie Smith was the standout athlete of the winter season, winning more than once and drawing the most votes in both Jan. 8-14 and Feb. 19-25. Meanwhile, Monroe girls basketball player Zoe Leach had the highest total votes throughout the entire winter season, earning 850 votes from Dec. 4-10.

Erie Mason girls basketball player Makenna Gallaher came in second place with 676 votes from Dec. 25-31, while Monroe girls basketball player Hayven Neddo finished third with 646 votes from Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Looking back on the winter season, there were many talented athletes that stood out across multiple sports and regions. Dundee’s Whitaker was named Player of the Year for All-Region Boys Basketball, while Dundee champs shared Wrestler of the Year honors in All-Region Wrestling.

Some other notable week-by-week winners for the winter season include Tyler Dafoe in football, Zoe Leach in basketball, Zennon Grant in hockey, Bailey Meiring in gymnastics, Makenna Gallaher in basketball again, Lukas Johnson in wrestling, Maggie Smith in bowling again, Kayla Liechty in gymnastics again
