Windows VPN Issues: Microsoft Urges Users to Get Help After Recent Security Update

How to Fix the Latest Windows Update That Disrupts VPN Connections

Microsoft has acknowledged a recent issue with the latest security update package for its Windows operating system, which has been causing VPN connections to be disrupted in both desktop and server versions. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, a tool that creates an encrypted connection between devices and remote servers, making it more secure than regular connections.

Microsoft has released an alert to users, informing them that Windows devices may experience VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 security update or the April 2024 non-security preview update. This is particularly concerning as VPNs are essential for internet security and privacy.

While Microsoft has yet to determine the root cause of these VPN failures, they have recommended users utilize the “Get Help” app from the search box for assistance. The affected versions include Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 and later.

Until Microsoft releases a final patch, there is a temporary solution for VPN issues. Users can remove LCU (Online Computing Units) after installing the combined SSU and LCU package using the DISM/Remove-Package command line option. However, this removes all security fixes included in those updates as well.

This isn’t the first time issues with VPN connections have arisen on Windows systems. In the past, Microsoft has investigated speed issues and released emergency updates to address these problems on Windows systems. Despite this setback, it’s worth noting that Windows operating systems hold a significant market share, accounting for 68.15% of the market in desktop, tablet, and console versions according to Statista.
