Will Recognizing Palestine Lead to Change in US Funding for UN? – The Case for and Against

The issue of an independent Palestinian state will be considered by the UN General Assembly

On May 10, a resolution recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council is expected to be submitted to the UN General Assembly. In a recent presentation, a similar resolution was blocked by the United States. While the decisions made by the General Assembly are advisory, the adoption of this resolution is anticipated to have broad support from UN members.

Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that if a decision is made to recognize Palestine, the United States should consider halting funding to the international organization, just like what happened with UNESCO when the Palestinian Authority was granted full member status. It is important to note that in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared independence of Palestine which was supported by 140 UN members. However, this did not lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
