Ho Chi Minh City has seen a rise in whooping cough cases this year, with 30 cases reported so far. Most of the cases have occurred in children under five years old, with 40% of them occurring in children under two months old who are not yet eligible for vaccination. Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, stated that the number of cases is on the rise compared to previous years and that most affected children either did not receive adequate vaccination or were too young for vaccination.

Whooping cough is a contagious respiratory illness that primarily affects young children and can be transmitted through the respiratory tract. The majority of pediatric whooping cough patients require oxygen and additional complications like pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and gastroesophageal reflux. In the southern region, there has been an increase in whooping cough cases, with 40 cases reported in the first five months of the year and 67% of them occurring in children under three months old who have not been vaccinated.

In response to rising cases, Ho Chi Minh City’s health sector is increasing regular and catch-up vaccinations and reviewing children who have not been adequately vaccinated against whooping cough. Vaccination is critical in preventing whooping cough as it starts when children are two months old. During epidemics, patients can develop severe symptoms and complications like pneumonia, especially in children under five years old.
