White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada collapses on first base, leaving game early with adductor strain

Yoán Moncada of the White Sox exits victory against Guardians prematurely after suffering groin strain.

White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada was forced to exit Tuesday’s game early after collapsing while trying to reach first base on a ground ball at Progressive Field. In the second inning of his team’s 7-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians, Moncada hit a ground ball to third and suddenly collapsed, landing on the ground hard. Despite being in significant pain, he was quickly ruled out due to a left adductor strain and helped off the field.

The severity of Moncada’s injury is unknown at this time, but he is considered day-to-day. The 28-year-old had been dealing with minor soreness in his hip and groin area in recent days, despite playing through it. Prior to leaving Tuesday’s game, Moncada had a .270 batting average with 10 hits in the season, his eighth with the White Sox. He had hit a single in the first inning to start a five-run inning for the team.

Despite Moncada’s absence, the White Sox were able to secure a two-run win against the Guardians, with Dominic Fletcher hitting a two-RBI double in the eighth inning. This victory was a welcome change for the struggling White Sox, who entered the game with a 1-9 record after losing five straight games, including a four-game sweep by the Kansas City Royals. Tuesday’s game marked the highest-scoring performance of the season for the White Sox.

The team will finish their three-game series against the Guardians on Wednesday before heading home to face the Reds in a three-game series starting Friday. Moncada’s availability for future games will depend on an evaluation of his injury in coming days.
