West Nile Fever Virus Discovered Near Ben Gurion International Airport: Guidelines Issued to Prevent Spread and Mosquito Breeding Hazards

Recently, the Ministry of Environment discovered mosquitoes infected with the West Nile fever virus near Ben Gurion International Airport. In response, the Ministry instructed the Airports Authority to expand monitoring and destruction of mosquito breeding grounds in the airport’s vicinity. Specialized pest control teams are actively identifying and capturing mosquitoes for analysis, and virological tests are conducted to detect the presence of West Nile fever.

To prevent the spread of this disease, the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health have issued guidelines for the public to reduce their risk. These guidelines recommend cleaning public sewers, draining standing water sources that serve as mosquito habitats, and ensuring all containers that collect water are removed, covered, or turned over to prevent breeding. Additionally, preventive measures against mosquito bites such as applying repellent, wearing protective clothing, installing insect repellents in rooms, using fans, installing insect screens, and reporting breeding hazards to local authorities are suggested.

The Ministry reminds the public to report any hazards that could lead to mosquito breeding or bites to local authorities and take necessary precautions to prevent them. By working together and following these guidelines
