Wayne Rooney’s New Chance at Redemption as Plymouth Argyle’s Potential New Head Coach

Rooney in talks with Plymouth about managerial vacancy

Plymouth Argyle is currently on the hunt for a new head coach following the departure of Ian Foster late last season. The 38-year-old Wayne Rooney, who holds the record for most goals scored for Manchester United with 253, is in talks with the team regarding their vacant manager position. Rooney is eager to rebuild his reputation after a tumultuous stint at Birmingham, where he suffered nine losses in 15 games.

Plymouth’s director of football, Neil Dewsnip, and coach Kevin Nancekivell took charge temporarily and managed to secure Plymouth’s safety in the league, ironically at the expense of Birmingham. Dewsnip has a prior connection with Rooney from their time together at Everton’s academy. During his playing career, Rooney amassed 763 appearances for clubs such as Everton, Manchester United, DC United in MLS, and eventually Derby County. After transitioning into a player-coach role at Derby in November 2020, he soon took over as the permanent manager before announcing his retirement two months later. Rooney then returned to the United States to manage his former club, DC United, before a brief tenure at Birmingham, where he was let go after less than three months in charge.
