Walter Cronkite’s Vision for the Future: Predictions and Reality

Walter Cronkite’s Predictions for the Year 2000: Hits and Misses

In April 1967, Popular Science invited the “most trusted man in America,” Walter Cronkite, to predict the future of the 21st century. Cronkite, a seasoned broadcaster and journalist, was excited to share his insights about what lay ahead.

The late 1960s were an exciting time for technology, with rapid advancements in fields such as medicine and computing. However, there were also concerns about the potential dangers of technology, such as the terrifying possibility of nuclear war and the potential misuse of scientific discoveries.

Cronkite’s predictions for the future included magnets embedded in roadways for safer travel, widespread use of hovercrafts for transportation, and home robots to handle “nuisance chores.” While some of these predictions have yet to come true, others have become a reality.
