Walmart’s Health Clinic Closures and Pharmacy Expansion: What it Means for Consumers in Texas and Beyond

High costs force Walmart to shut down 7 health clinics in Texas

In recent news, Walmart has reached a $45 million settlement in a class action lawsuit accusing the company of charging customers more than advertised prices for select products. Meanwhile, the retail giant is shutting down its health clinics in five states, including Texas, due to rising costs. The company had been providing low-cost medical care to patients at these clinics for the past five years. However, Walmart announced that it will be closing its 51 health clinics and its telehealth business due to lack of a sustainable business model.

Some of the Walmart health clinics in Texas that will be closing include Fort Worth, Garland, Palestine, Pearland, Royse City, Sugar Land, Tomball, and Tyler. These clinics offered medical, dental, and behavioral health care services next to Walmart Supercenters. Despite this closure, Walmart will continue to focus on its nearly 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 vision centers across the United States. The company’s pharmacies have expanded to offer testing and treatment services, access to specialty medications, medication therapy management, and various health screenings. Additionally, Walmart has introduced new features at its vision centers such as a virtual try-on capability using augmented reality.
