Walmart Closes In-Store Health Centers Across Five States, Leaves Many Without Access to Care

In a surprising move, Walmart has announced the closure of all 51 in-store health centers across five states, including 17 in Georgia. The company cited financial reasons for shutting down both the health centers and virtual care services, stating that they were no longer financially sustainable.

The decision impacts not only patients receiving care but also the associates and providers delivering care, as well as the communities that supported the centers. The challenging reimbursement environment and rising operating costs were said to be the primary reasons for the closure of the health centers.

Despite this setback, Walmart remains committed to providing its customers with healthcare resources. The company reassured that its pharmacies and vision centers nationwide would remain open for business. Employees affected by the closures at the health centers are being offered the opportunity to transfer to other Walmart or Sam’s Club locations. These employees will receive 90 days’ pay unless they transfer to a different location or leave the company during that time. If they do not transfer or leave after 90 days, they will be eligible for severance benefits as outlined in the press release.
