Voyager 1’s Data Flow Restores Scientific Research in Interstellar Space

NASA’s Voyager 1, the spacecraft farthest from Earth, has resumed sending scientific data after a computer problem in November. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced this week that Voyager 1’s four instruments are back in operation. The team received meaningful information from Voyager 1 in April and recently instructed it to begin studying its environment once again. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is currently traveling through interstellar space, the space between star systems.

Voyager 1 is currently over 15 billion miles (24.14 kilometers) from Earth, while its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, is also in interstellar space and more than 12 billion miles (19.31 kilometers) away.
